Reflecting on a Moment: The Power of Reflection in Supervision

In the fast-paced world of coaching and mentoring, it's easy to move from one session to the next without pause. But embedded within our practice are moments.. subtle, powerful, or even confusing  that hold deep insight. Reflecting on just one of these moments in supervision can unlock growth for both coach and client.

Why “One Moment” Matters

A single moment .. a silence that felt heavy, a question that changed everything, or a sense of discomfort, can be the entry point to richer self-awareness. These moments are often easy to overlook, yet they carry valuable information about our responses, assumptions, and unconscious patterns.

Bringing these moments to supervision allows us to slow down and explore what was happening within us, the client, and the relational dynamic. It’s less about finding the “right answer” and more about staying curious.

Reflection in Supervision: A Practice of Depth

Supervision provides a safe, structured space to hold up the mirror. When we reflect on a moment in supervision, we can:

·         Notice our triggers and blind spots

·         Distinguish between projection and perception

·         Revisit our ethical stance or role clarity

·         Reconnect with our values and intention

This reflection supports ethical, effective, and embodied coaching or mentoring. It helps us stay present, avoid burnout, and deepen our practice.

A Simple Invitation

Next time you enter supervision, try this: bring one moment .. just one .. that stayed with you. Ask: What happened there? What did I feel? What might I have missed?

You don’t need a fully formed story. Just the willingness to explore.

Because in that single moment, there’s often more than meets the eye, and supervision is where it can truly come to light.
